Collective Picture of Progress
June 17, 2007
collaborative, mixed media on canvas, 20" x 24"

The League of Young Voters threw an art auction party called "Picture Progress" on June 15 at Red Ink Studios. The League of Young Voters' long term strategy is to "build an inspired, engaged and effective culture and community around youth participation." I think that's a good plan.

I asked people at the event to draw a picture of themselves creating social change which I then incorporated into this "Collective Picture of Progress."

You can see close-ups of this painting in the "Picture of Progress details" topic gallery on this site.

Artists who contributed to this painting include Sergio Flores, Jamai Lowell, Karil Daniels, Lucas Thornton, Andy Goldman, Debra Bronstein, Alidra Solday, Ariana, Camille, Nicole Rivera, Agata Kamler, Ofra Fisher, Martha, Melita Morales, Razzu Engen, Esther Morales, Kell$, Henry Lyon, Laura Mason, Neil Pacheco, Jesse Allen, Arseno Smith, Peter Lyon, Lyndsey Chaille, Nykolas Mamula, Justin Wonge, Gabe Weis, Charity, Ezra, and Carolynn Box. In recognition of their help, a portion of the sale price of this painting will be donated to the League of Young Voters.

This painting is currently featured in The League's online art gallery.

"Si, Se Puede" at City Hall
May 1, 2007
marker and pencil on paper, 5" x 7"

For the second year in a row, May Day (International Workers Day for the rest of the world) was a day to rally for the rights of immigrant workers in the United States. I stopped by San Francisco's civic center on the way home where thousands were gathered to call for amnesty and respect for the people who keep our economy running.

Apparently, some cops got violent in L.A.

This is the drawing of the week for April 28 - May 5, 2007.

Tamara and Son as Lobbyists
April 3, 2006
marker and pencil on paper, 5" x 7"

In a visite to New York State Senator Carl Marcellino's office, Tamara Sargus talks to the senator's assistant while her son plays with his friends.

I had joined this group of women with my mother that day to explain to Marcellino's staff that Emergency Contraception is different from the "abortion pill," RU-486, and actually prevents abortions. This Republican could support legislation to make the pill more easily available without contradicting his anti-choice beliefs. It seemed clear that the day's action helped inform his staff and could very well change the politician's vote.

This is the drawing of the week for April 2-8, 2006.

Rage at the DNC
March 25, 2006
acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 20" x 24" (donated)

This is a painting I made soon after attending the protests at the Democratic National Convention held in Los Angeles in 2000. I repainted it recently to donate to the League of Young Voters for Picture Progress, a silent art auction at Red Ink Studios.

In this scene, many in the audience give the finger to the Staples Center where the elite of the Democratic Party were annointing Al Gore as the candidate to take no real progressive stand in "losing" to George Bush while Rage Against the Machine played. Later, while Ozomatli played (after I had headed back to my friend's couch), the police shut the concert down with a barrage of rubber bullets.

Drowning Out Bush in Union Square
January 31, 2006
marker and pencil on paper, 8" x 10"

While Bush gave his State of the Union Speech, I joined other activists in Union Square to make some noise because the world can't wait another three years to get rid of this regime. I certainly wasn't going to listen to the speech. I mean, seriously, Bush's credibility has been shot for years.

This is the drawing of the week for January 29 - February 4, 2006.
