Classroom at Enola D. Maxwell Middle School
January 21, 2004
acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 3.5' x 5'

I was brought on as a substitute at Enola Maxwell Middle School in Portrero Hill. It's supposed to be a school for the arts. I'd like to say the kids learned something during that time, but really, I'm just happy no one got hurt.

This is a large painting, so I've also posted some details of it. These are included in the 'Classroom at Maxwell Details' topic.

October 10, 2003
marker on paper, 4" x 5.5"

At a brown bag lunch workshop for teachers at Enola Maxwell middle school, Rudy Corpuz, Jr., founder of United Playaz, talks about the pressures students face from gangs. Many neighborhoods in San Francisco are unsafe for young people of color to visit. Rudy, a gang member who spent time in prison, can talk from experience - and has been extremely effective preventing gang violence at Balboa High school and elsewhere.

Simple Beauty (Mercede's Desk)
September 11, 2003
marker on paper, 8" x 6"

I gave this drawing to 6th-grader Brianna Carrier who titled it 'Simple Beauty'. "The smallest things make the biggest differences."

Mr. Gow, who was then the principal of the school, told me I should stop by on 9/11/03 to talk about being the on-site sub for Enola Maxwell. I was waiting in the office for a couple hours looking at Mercede's desk. Mr. Gow hadn't told anyone that he was going to a principals' meeting. He totally stood me up.

Behaved for Once
September 10, 2003
marker on paper, 8" x 6"

"Must be amazing to get this class behaved. You must be good" - Brianna Carrier wrote this in response to this drawing she claimed. Brianna is in Ms. Bo's science and math class at Enola Maxwell Middle School. I was their sub for the last two weeks before before winter break in 2003.

This picture is of a class at the same school that Mr. Tigerino was teaching at the time. They are reading quietly after having to 'write lines' the day before.
