Cyborg Overture
February 4, 2007
acrylic on canvas, 9" x 12" (sold)

We've gotten our tickets and we're preparing for Burning Man. Usually, the event's theme is an afterthought - but this year's theme, the Green Man, actually has some meaning. Participants are being asked to consider the whole of humans' relation to nature:

"Some say it's our chief duty to preserve the natural world intact, protected from the ways of man. This is a worthy goal. And yet, if Burning Man has taught us anything, it's that we can collaborate with nature. Only from immediate experience, not ideologies that stand outside of the created world, may we regenerate a sense of nature as it moves within us and flows through us."

This little painting is a riff on that theme.

It reminds one viewer of an "electric-cement-mixer."

Ozomatli in Stern Grove
September 12, 2006
acrylic on canvas, 9" x 12" (sold)

Ozomatli plays in front of towering redwood trees in the San Francisco treasure of Stern Grove. The site has amazing natural acoustics, which is why Rosalie Stern insisted that free concerts always be held there as a condition of her gift of the park to the city of San Francisco.

Church Above Perissa
May 23, 2006
marker and watercolor on paper, 4" x 6"

They put churches everywhere on the Greek Islands. This is the final drawing from a series of handmade postcards from Greece. Scroll down to start with the first postcard, "On the Good Ship Dimitroula,"

...to the town of Perrissa on the island of Thira on the island cluster of Santorini, in the Cyclades Islands in Greece, etc. Perissa is one of the beaches of black, lavaliscious, toe-searing, off-putting sand... Then we are relaxed and ready - if reluctant - to begin our long journey home...
XOXO - Lauren and Todd

Windmills of Hora, Amorgos
May 19, 2006
marker and watercolor on paper, 4" x 6"

Another Postcard from Greece - a series of handmade postcards depicting a trip to the Greek Cyclades islands. These are in reverse chronological order - the first postcard is "The Good Ship Dimitroula."

We hiked 6km - always up hill, and quite a hill at that - away from Katapola, the port town in the middle of long, mountainous Amorgos island, towards Hora, the main town at the tippy-top of the island's peaks... There are few places in the world - in the small part of the world we've seen - that look like a painting rather than as a real place in real time, and Hora on Amorgos is just that. XOXO - Todd & Lauren

This is the drawing of the week for May 14-20, 2006.

Through the Aegean Sea
May 18, 2006
marker on paper, 4" x 6"

The drawing on this postcard records my impressions of the seascape as we ferried from Naxos to Amorgos.

Just this moment arrived in Amorgos, a long, thin island only ~20mi long in the Greek Cyclades islands. As we stepped off our ferry, after a little more than six placed hours of saaaiiiling, we were greeted by a dozen women holding up laminated books of their domatia and cheap hotels...
