Gandiji on the Beach
December 31, 2004
watercolor and marker on paper, 4" x 6"

This is a drawing I did on my trip to India, 11 months ago, of a Gandhi statue on the beach of Chennai. This is in one of the areas devestated by the recent tsunami. There was a scaffolding around him as it was the day after the 56th anniversary of his death. To mark the day, people climbed the scaffolding and placed wreaths over his head.

WWGD?

One excellent group that you can count on to use the money in the best way possible is Doctors Without Borders. This is one of the organizations Raja always recommends (Raja is now on the board of the Health Justice Collaborative).

Postcards From India
February 19, 2004
title page for a series

Lauren and I travelled through India for three weeks. With watercolors and markers, I drew the scenery on postcards, which we used to send tales of our travels to friends. I photoed each card before sending it, and most are posted here for your enjoyment.

The most recent artwork always comes first on this site. If you click 'next page' and scroll down, you'll find 'Singapore Layover', the first picture in this series.

Other drawings from India are posted in the topics 'Given as Gifts in India' and 'Indian Artists'.

Rajesh at India Coffee House
February 5, 2004
marker and pencil on paper, 4" x 5.5"

We went to an Indian diner chain in a spiral building in Trivandrum. We had just arrived in Kerala and didn't know the local food yet. Rajesh came over, helped us order some food and chatted with us with what little English he knew. His less adventurous friends sat at the next table giggling.

S. Sekar in Sarasu Art Gallery
February 2, 2004
photo

We were trying to get the beach in Mamallapuram, but our driver didn't know the way (and couldn't take directions). That's when we found a small house filled with colorful paintings and sculptures.

We met several talented artists in India. There are a few of them grouped together in this site (in the topic, 'Indian Artists').

Sara - Bride with Garlands
February 1, 2004
marker on paper, 4" x 3"

Sara spent a lot of time during the wedding sitting on the stage, not knowing what was going on. Those garlands around her neck are heavy and abrasive.

I gave all the wedding drawings to Raja's parents.
