Impressions of the Tenderloin
May 14, 2008
collaborative, mixed media on paper, 24" x 30"

with painting by Melody L., Kaiulani W., stencils by Micco F., photography by Ben Chun, and writing and drawings by other students.

This painting is part of a group artistic exploration of San Francisco that I have been working on at Galileo Academy. Students ideas about the Tenderloin Neighborhood and parts of SOMA are collaged together into this cityscape.

One student wrote, as part of an affiliated 'zine project, "i have no problem walking through sixth street. i always walk by and no on gives me trouble. i know a few people from sixth street and its not that bad. and all this stuff about TL being violent is untrue. if you don't mess with people, they don't mess with you. the beefing stuff with TL and sixth street don't even matter cuz its not like they stop you and ask you where your from."

The "Confront Your Fears in the Library" project
October 17, 2007
collaborative project

This drawing by Melodie is to help advertise the collaborative, educational, decorative art project we are conducting in the Galileo Academy Library.

Students draw something that they are afraid of, then hang that drawing by books that are about that topic. This helps students learn how to find books as they decorate the library. Once they find these books, the students can then read about their fears and overcome those fears through with knowledge. See the drawings in the "Fear in the Library" gallery on this site.

This is the "drawing" of the week for October 14-20, 2007.

Yum Cart Catches a Rainbow
August 31, 2007
photograph

For three years (2002, 2003 and 2005)I attended Burning Man as part of Yum Camp. We operated the Taste Wagon - purveyors of Every Flavor in the Known Universe. It is a magical experience to serve up a taste on demand in the middle of the desert. We knew we would not be returning to Black Rock City in 2006, and were dispirited at the thought that the much-loved Taste Wagon would not return.

But the playa would provide.

We met Sam who agreed to carry on the tradition. Through great trials and despite the best efforts of U-Haul, Sam brought the Taste Wagon to the desert in 2006, and built the Yum Cart to deliver flavor in 2007. On a Friday afternoon during a vicious dust storm, I stood back to back with Sam and served tastes.

Then there was a rainbow.

This is the art of the week for August 26 - September 1, 2007.

The World According to Young Nonprofit Professionals
March 6, 2007
collaborative, acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 20" x 24"

At a Young Nonprofit Professionals Network party to thank their volunteers, the art didn't stop. The young nonprofit professionals brainstormed about connections with markers on a piece of paper hung on the wall while I painted their ideas onto the canvas.

I don't know exactly how to read it - but it seems that the super volunteer is providing free beer, with love, to other volunteers who are greening business (utilizing the power of trends) which is also driving (or being driven by) other institutions while government seems mired in elitism and others work on building bridges.

Collectively Inspired View of the 7th Annual Monster Drawing Rally
February 23, 2007
marker and pencil on paper, 8" x 10" (donated)

I was a drawer at Southern Exposure's 7th Annual Monster Drawing Rally. This is a view from the drawing table created using ideas suggested by the jam-packed crowd of on-lookers.

I put out a piece of paper asking for words to describe the event replies included: "Beer Breath," "Stuffed," "Energized," "Sex (so it will sell)," and "Great People Watching" - and things that need to be included in a drawing of the monster rally. Some ideas people wrote were: "Unicorns," "Monsters!," "Monster sitting on a toad stool," "Lobster," "Space," and "An Elephant Drawing," all of which I kept adding to the drawing until I realized that it was 9 O'clock and my turn was up. John Casey's drawing hand also appears in this drawing (he's not the elephant).

This is the drawing of the week for February 18-24, 2007.

Zeitgeist at Zeitgeist
June 22, 2006
collaborative, acrylic and collage on canvas, 20" x 24"

Hanging at Zeitgeist on my birthday, I had friends and other fellow beer-gardeners draw pictures on paper of either "A force in the world," a "representation of their soul" or "whatever".

I painted these drawings onto a canvas which will create an image of the meaning on life.

By request, I have created a mini-poster of this image which can be bought at The Art Don't Stop on Stuff, my new CafePress store. As with all collaborative art on this site, if anyone buys the original canvas, a portion of the money will go to an appropriate charity or political cause.
