A More Green Market Street
October 22, 2005
acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 30" x 36"

This is a painting of Market Street guided by the imagination of randomly selected San Franciscans who contributed drawings and ideas about our cities main artery. This process can be seen in the "Market Street Project" topic gallery.

There were quite a few people who favored turning Market Street into a waterway and many more who wanted the street to be "greener" in a variety of ways.

I collaged these contributions onto the sides of the canvas and included some of the kiosk poster designs in the corners.

Market Street Canal in progress
July 5, 2005
acrylic on canvas, 30" x 36"

This is a painting in progress of San Francisco's Market Street. I'm incorporating various ideas from the imaginations of fellow San Francisans. Many people envisioned Market Street as a waterway. The F Line street cars become boats and the whole area becomes greener and more colorful.

Lost on Market Street Island
June 20, 2005
collaboration, marker on photocopy, 5" x 7"

I spent a little time talking to some folks on Market Street on a Monday. Seville drew this picture and described his idea. He imagined a man stuck on a desert island. It's a beautiful island on a beautiful day. The man is relaxed and happy until he realizes that he is completely lost and the water is filled with sharks.

Seville's anonymous friend described his vision of money growing on trees. Unfortunately, the branches were too high and a poor person cannot reach the dangling bills.

Peace Street with Enhanced Arch
May 12, 2005
collaboration, marker on photocopy, 9" x 8"

I have added more color and detail to the vision of Market Street created by Samy Spoon, Stella Maris, Liz, and others (the original is dated May 7).

This picture is part of my Market Street Project. I will continue to use collaborative drawing and brainstorming to collect images and ideas from San Franciscans to help me create a collectively informed painting of this city's principal artery. Keep visiting the 'Market Street Project' topic gallery on this site to watch how this experiment in art and group dialogue develops.
