Keep it PG (Substitute Teacher Artist detail)
February 26, 2007
collaborative, acrylic and mixed media on canvas

There are three guidelines that I like students to follow when working on some collaborative drawings together;
1. Keep it PG ("@!*#" is ok),
2. No Hating (except for celebrities and politicians) and, most importantly,
3. Work with what's there. Just look at each piece of art and add whatever words or drawings come to mind.

The Substitute Promotes Creativity
December 24, 2005
marker and pencil on paper, 8.5" x 11"

This is a sort of self portrait of me in a classroom explaining the three rules of a collaborative drawing excercise.

I instruct students to use my markers to add words and pictures to the papers we pass around and tell them there are just three rules:
1.PG - keep it clean so I can share them with everyone.
2. No Hating - don't write anything mean and don't talk about people you know personally. Partly because it could be slander and partly because no one else will get the joke if they don't know that person. Celebrities and politicians, however, are fair game.
3.Work with what's there - Don't just add the same thing to each paper. Look at what's there and go with that theme.

This is the drawing of the week for December 26-31, 2005.

The Ultimate Teacher
November 7, 2005
collaboration, marker and pencil on paper, 8.5" x 11"

Created with students in Ms. Barret's classes at Galileo High School. This is part of a "Re-Imagining Education" project to use art to explore problems and possibilities in our approaches to education.

While I was the substitute, students passed paper around and reflected on various themes including the theme of education.

Here, they collectively imagined the "Ultimate Teacher" - "knowz how to have a good 'friend' relationship w/ students," "No Homework!!," "Muscular," "Open Minded," "I make learning FUN!," "All of you kids get Free time," and more.

I finished this piece by putting this teacher in his natural habitat.

Kids Need to Get Slapped
November 5, 2005
collaboration, marker and pencil on paper, 8.5" x 11"

Created with students in Ms. Barret's Class at Galileo by passing a paper around in a collaborative process.

One student initiated this piece with the title, "Kids Need to Get Slapped" and the red circles which inspired a range of responses dealing with issues of guilt and punishment - "I didn't do it!" - "I got sent to my room" - "I got into a fight!" - "Dropped out of school" - "I got kicked out before" - "No pain no game" - "Why?"...

What Is Life?
November 3, 2005
collaboration, marker on paper, 8.5" x 11"

"Get used to life" "Life is a big question" "Love" "Death"...

Created collaboratively by students in Ms. Barret's class at Galileo (while Mr. Berman was subbing). Basically, one of us would give a piece of paper a theme, then pass it around for everyone else to contribute. This and the whole pile of interesting and bizarre collaboration from that day may become source and collage material for future projects.
