Power Glove (Prophe-See TV detail)
August 24, 2007
collaborative, acrylic and mixed media on canvas scroll

I collected drawings of things from the future from the 9th graders in my computer art class at Galileo High School. I collaged these drawings into 3 10-foot long paintings on canvas that I rolled up into scrolls to bring to Burning Man, the art festival in the desert.

I presented these scrolls as "Prophe-See TV" at the festival and collected more drawings from people there to add to the collective vision of this "future of our own creation."

This is the "drawing" of the "week" for August 12-25.

Collective Picture of Progress
June 17, 2007
collaborative, mixed media on canvas, 20" x 24"

The League of Young Voters threw an art auction party called "Picture Progress" on June 15 at Red Ink Studios. The League of Young Voters' long term strategy is to "build an inspired, engaged and effective culture and community around youth participation." I think that's a good plan.

I asked people at the event to draw a picture of themselves creating social change which I then incorporated into this "Collective Picture of Progress."

You can see close-ups of this painting in the "Picture of Progress details" topic gallery on this site.

Artists who contributed to this painting include Sergio Flores, Jamai Lowell, Karil Daniels, Lucas Thornton, Andy Goldman, Debra Bronstein, Alidra Solday, Ariana, Camille, Nicole Rivera, Agata Kamler, Ofra Fisher, Martha, Melita Morales, Razzu Engen, Esther Morales, Kell$, Henry Lyon, Laura Mason, Neil Pacheco, Jesse Allen, Arseno Smith, Peter Lyon, Lyndsey Chaille, Nykolas Mamula, Justin Wonge, Gabe Weis, Charity, Ezra, and Carolynn Box. The World According to Young Nonprofit Professionals
March 6, 2007
collaborative, acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 20" x 24"

At a Young Nonprofit Professionals Network party to thank their volunteers, the art didn't stop. The young nonprofit professionals brainstormed about connections with markers on a piece of paper hung on the wall while I painted their ideas onto the canvas.

I don't know exactly how to read it - but it seems that the super volunteer is providing free beer, with love, to other volunteers who are greening business (utilizing the power of trends) which is also driving (or being driven by) other institutions while government seems mired in elitism and others work on building bridges.

The Ultimate Effective Classroom
January 11, 2007
collaborative, mixed media on canvas, 30" x 36"

Teachers, donors, staff and other members of the RISE (Resources for Indispensable Schools and Educators) family at the "Giving Credit Where Credit is Due" celebration of teachers made small drawings or wrote about their vision of the ultimate effective classroom. These drawings and ideas were all collaged onto the canvas and incorporated into this painting of a fantasy classroom scene.

Some contributions were symbolic and others practical. People imagined laptops for students, an art station, a bio-garden, a teacher nap area, and of course, "lot's n' lot's of LOVE."

This is one in a growing series of Collective Vision paintings that incorporate drawings and ideas on a specified theme from a large group of people. The process of creating each painting is a creative experience that can be as important as the resulting product. I'm looking for more opportunities to pursue this process - let me know if this is an activity you might like to have at your event.

This painting is part of the "Where We Learn" series.

Artists who helped create this painting include: Ann Shiojia, Wendy Ellen Cochran, Lisa Finkelstein, P.L. Corona, Andi Bistline, Liza Dwyer, Vishal Verma, Diane Posher, Jose Espinoza, Joshua T. Toy (age 7), Hien Nguyen, Michele Samuels, Stephen Dodson, Charles Cooke, Jamaika Wharton and the staff of RISE, Temp Keller, Jim Ahrens, Lindsay Steinmetz, Mike Costa, and Jessica Aebi.
To honor all of this participation, a portion of the sale of this painting will be donated to RISE.
