Surreal San Francisco

painting series

Follow my progress as I paint a giant heart sculpture for charity

This ongoing series of paintings explores the geography and the spirit of San Francisco. I love the way that neighborhoods spill down the hills of this city and how the fog splashes across the landscape. But there’s more to this city than the beauty of her views. Those elements are represented by scribbles and machinery images, and little distortions of sizes and shapes.

In November of 2021, I applied this style to a 400lb heart sculpture to help raise money for the SF General Hospital Foundation. Learn more and see how I painted the heart here.

Flowers Glen Park

acrylic on canvas, 24” x 36”, 2022, for sale

This is based on the view from the Grande Water Tower, aka “Little Coit Blue”, in MacLaren Park. You can see Mt. Davidson, Glen Canyon Park, and Twin Peaks. That bright blue building is Glen Park Elementary School. This was painted on a canvas from a neighbor. It has more texture than most paintings and is on narrower (0.5”) canvas stretchers than most other paintings of this scale.
